This is the precept upon which our Pilgrim School is founded. We are committed to enabling each member of our community to flourish.
The Pupil Premium Grant is funding in addition to the schools budget and is based on the number of pupils eligible for free school meals (FSM) and all children who have been eligible for FSM within the last six years; Looked After Children (LAC) and for those children whose parents are currently in the Armed Forces.
The DfE have stated that schools have the freedom to decide how to use this funding as they see fit based upon their knowledge of individual pupils needs and that all pupils are taught to a good standard.
Our school’s Pupil Premium strategy is rooted in our Pilgrim School vision and therefore puts children at the centre of the learning process. Learning at The Pilgrim School is intrinsically linked with Character Education: the philosophy with which to develop knowledge, skills and attributes in order to flourish both as individuals and also as a society. We believe that every pupil should have the opportunity to flourish - academically, socially and emotionally - irrespective of their background or the challenges they face. We believe that all pupils should achieve and experience personal success. The focus of our pupil premium strategy is to support disadvantaged pupils to achieve that goal, including progress for those who are already high attainers.
We will consider the challenges faced by vulnerable pupils, such as those who have a social worker and young carers. The activity we have outlined in this statement is also intended to support their needs, regardless of whether they are disadvantaged or not. We endeavour to use the Pupil Premium Grant (PPG) to overcome barriers to learning and close the attainment gap. The PPG is used in a variety of ways to provide additional support and interventions for all pupils but with a particular focus on those in receipt of ‘Free School Meals’ (FSM), ‘Ever 6’ pupils and ‘Looked After Children’ (LAC). Our objective is to target these funds to ensure the continued progress and academic achievement of all disadvantaged children within our school.
We are aware that, one of the key principles to achieve our objective is to ensure that our provision is of the highest quality. Outstanding teaching and learning must be at the forefront of all we do and our provision for our disadvantaged children must be centred within a whole school approach. Our high-quality staff are dedicated to ensuring that every child in the class has not only the opportunity, but the expectation to achieve highly and experience success. At Pilgrim we will focus on areas in which disadvantaged pupils require the most support. This is proven to have the greatest impact on closing the disadvantage attainment gap and at the same time will benefit the non-disadvantaged pupils in our school. Implicit in the intended outcomes detailed below, is the intention that non-disadvantaged pupils’ attainment will be sustained and improved alongside progress for their disadvantaged peers.
Our approach will be responsive to common challenges and individual needs, rooted in robust diagnostic assessment, not assumptions about the impact of disadvantage. The approaches we have adopted complement each other to help pupils excel. To ensure they are effective we will:
- ensure disadvantaged pupils are challenged in the work that they’re set
- act early to intervene at the point need is identified
- adopt a whole school approach in which all staff take responsibility for disadvantaged pupils’ outcomes and raise expectations of what they can achieve
We will continually review the support and interventions we provide and add or remove initiatives to ensure continued success, raised aspirations and to limit social exclusion.
