Phonics
Phonics is a method of teaching children to read by helping them recognise the relationship between letters and the sounds they represent.
Children learn to:
- Recognise individual letter sounds (phonemes)
- Blend sounds together to read words
- Segment words into sounds for spelling and writing
- Develop fluency and confidence in reading
Daily phonics lessons provide children with regular opportunities to practise and apply their knowledge and skills.
The programme ensures that all children have the opportunity to:
- Learn new sounds and letter formations in a structured order
- Revisit and practise previously taught sounds regularly
- Develop reading fluency through repeated practice
- Build confidence as successful readers
Reading Practice Sessions
Alongside daily phonics lessons, children take part in reading practice sessions each week using books that closely match the phonics sounds they have learned. This helps children to:
- Practise decoding words confidently
- Develop reading fluency and expression (prosody)
- Build understanding of what they read (comprehension)
- Experience success and enjoyment in reading

Little Wandle Parent Workshop
Please find below a recording of our Phonics Zoom workshop for parents where we introduced our new early reading and phonics system. Many thanks to all those who attended, it was lovely to see your interest in this important aspect of your child's early learning. If you weren't able to make it, don't worry, hopefully the recording will provide you with plenty of information and we have lots more reading events planned throughout the year to look forward to sharing with you all. As always, we welcome any questions and comments - please continue to chat with us as we work together to support your child on their exciting Pilgrim journey.
